Kiwis will now be able to fly non-stop to the popular holiday destination of Bali with the launch of Air New Zealand’s new twice weekly service between Auckland and Denpasar Airport.

The Boeing 767-300 service will operate seasonally over the peak demand period of June to October, but has the potential to operate year round if there’s sufficient demand.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe says Bali is already a popular destination for Kiwis and the non-stop service will now make it even more accessible.

“Our flight time of eight and a half hours is a significant improvement on the indirect services offered by competitors that can involve long layovers and a total journey time of at least 14 and sometimes more than 24 hours.”

“We’ll be offering our flexible and popular ‘Seats to Suit’ fare structure on the Bali route with great pricing and arrival and departure times to be announced closer to the on-sale date of 23 February,” Mr Fyfe says.

“Bali has a stable tropical climate and great value food and accommodation, making it a really affordable way for New Zealanders to enjoy a resort style holiday in Asia at a fraction of the price of other destinations.”

The inaugural flight will depart on Wednesday June 20, subject to government and regulatory approvals. The Boeing 767-300 has 24 Business Class and 204 Economy Class seats.

Bali is a great addition to Air New Zealand’s portfolio of island destinations which includes Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, Samoa, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Vanuatu, Norfolk Island, Niue and Honolulu.

Air New Zealand last operated services between Auckland to Bali in the 1990s using a Boeing 767-200 aircraft.

airberlin will become a full member of oneworld® with effect from Tuesday 20 March 2012, adding Europe’s sixth largest carrier to the premier global airline alliance. Austrian airline NIKI, also a member of the airberlin group, will join oneworld at the same time as an affiliate member.

airberlin received its green light to board oneworld after successfully completing a thorough review of its readiness conducted by British Airways, which is sponsoring its entry into the alliance, with the oneworld central team.

So from 20 March 2012, it will be offering oneworld’s full range of services – and substantially expand the alliance’s network in Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, and throughout South and Central Europe. It will add almost 70 destinations to the alliance’s map, extending oneworld’s global coverage to some 840 destinations in 150 countries, served by more than 9,000 departures a day operated by a combined fleet of some 2,500 aircraft, carrying nearly 300 million passengers a year, with annual revenues of almost US$ 100 billion.

Joining oneworld will strengthen airberlin’s competitiveness, enabling it to offer customers an unrivalled alliance global network served by partners including some of the best and biggest airlines in the world.

It will become part of oneworld three months before it moves into the new Brandenburg airport at its Berlin home, which will open on 3 June with an eventual capacity for 27 million passengers a year. airberlin and its alliance partners will be co-located at Europe’s newest hub, sharing lounges and many other facilities, to offer customers there the smoothest of connections.

oneworld CEO Bruce Ashby said: “airberlin makes an ideal oneworld partner. It has an excellent reputation for customer service – right in line with oneworld’s focus on quality. oneworld already features five of Europe’s best airlines. Adding the continent’s sixth biggest carrier and the second largest airline based in the continent’s biggest economy will greatly enhance our coverage throughout this region and, with the other airlines joining us this year, position oneworld more strongly still as the alliance of choice, particularly for global business travellers.”

airberlin CEO Hartmut Mehdorn added: “Becoming a member of oneworld is one of the most significant departures so far for airberlin. It will strengthen our competitive position considerably, enabling us to offer our customers a truly global network together with our partners who include some of the best and biggest airlines in the world, while enabling us also to tap into all the financial benefits that come from being part of a global alliance, through additional passenger feed and participation in various efficiency programmes. We are very pleased and proud to be lining up to join what is clearly the world’s top quality airline grouping on 20 March.”

When airberlin joins oneworld on 20 March, members of its topbonus frequent flyer programme will be able to earn and redeem mileage awards on all oneworld partners – American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN Airlines, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and almost 20 affiliated airlines.

Also from 20 March, the 120 million members of the established oneworld airlines’ frequent flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem awards and tier status points and receive all other oneworld benefits on airberlin and NIKI.

airberlin’s network – serving more than 160 destinations in 40 countries – will be covered by oneworld’s full and extensive range of alliance fares and sales products from 1 April 2012.

Currently all oneworld’s active member airlines serve Germany, flying to a total of seven gateways in there. airberlin will add another 18 destinations in its home country.

Its alliance implementation programme has represented one of the most extensive projects in its history, with working groups covering some 20 streams of activity. Projects are nearing completion to bring its various internal processes and procedures into line with the alliance’s requirements, and extensive employee training and communications programmes are now underway at airberlin and the alliance’s existing members, to ensure they are ready to provide oneworld’s customer services and benefits across the expanded alliance from 20 March.

Since accepting an invitation to join the alliance in July 2010, airberlin has implemented code-sharing with seven established oneworld partners – American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Malév Hungarian Airlines, S7 and Royal Jordanian.

Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s national carrier, has announced it will expand its network routes and frequencies throughout Asia following strong passenger movements from Australia and the region.

From January to November last year, Garuda Indonesia transported 15.4 million passengers, an increase of 36.4 per cent compared to last year’s 11.32 million passengers, increasing the airline’s passenger yield – the return per seat – by 13 per cent.

Commenting on the airlines significant growth, Bagus Y. Siregar, Senior General Manager Australia/SWP Garuda Indonesia said: “We’re experiencing high demand on the Australia-Jakarta routes with outbound passenger numbers increasing nearly 12 per cent from 2010 to 150,587 passengers.

“In 2012 Garuda Indonesia will be making a more concerted effort to expand our international network with new destinations in and beyond Indonesia including services to Taipei and Haneda Tokyo, which will start in Q2*. These new services will provide our Australian passengers with a seamless connection via our hub in Jakarta and greater access to our Asian network.”

Leveraging the vigorous economic growth in the Asia Pacific region, Garuda Indonesia recently increased its frequencies on a number of international routes including Sydney-Denpasar, Denpasar-Seoul, Melbourne-Jakarta and Melbourne-Denpasar.

Garuda Indonesia’s network expansion is an integral part of the airlines ‘Quantum Leap’ strategy, which aims to boost the airline’s competitiveness significantly by 2015 and includes the revitalisation the entire fleet.

In 2012, Garuda Indonesia will welcome 11 new aircraft including four B737-800 Next Generations, two A330-200s and five Sub-100 seaters. By the end of the year, Garuda Indonesia will be operating a lot younger fleet with aircraft aged 5.7 on average, whereas in 2011 planes were averagely aged 6.4 years old.

Garuda Indonesia will continue to invest in fleet expansion as passenger demand to Asia continues to grow.

Vueling, Spain’s new-generation airline, is set to capture a significant part of the domestic and European traffic affected by the demise of Spanair, which suspended flights on Saturday, January 28. As a result, Vueling’s Summer 2012 programme will offer as much as a 50% increase in capacity over 2011 from its home base in Barcelona, and a 25% growth overall.

Speaking to media in Barcelona, CEO Alex Cruz announced that the carrier will add a total of 33 new frequencies to its existing domestic and European routes reaching, in some cases, up to 14 daily flights between Madrid and Barcelona, nine to Bilbao and eight to Seville and Palma Mallorca, among others.

Vueling already flies to 72 destinations in Continental Europe, the British Isles, North Africa and the Middle East. Initial plans before the Spanair situation called for new routes as of March 25 from Barcelona to Copenhagen and Stockholm, four times per week. Given the new circumstances, these plans have been brought forward and augmented to the tune of 11 weekly flights to each of these Scandinavian airports, effective immediately.

New routes previously flown by Spanair will also be put in daily operation as of March 25 to Berlin and Hamburg, along with an increase to four daily frequencies on Vueling´s existing Munich service.

The Barcelona-based carrier will also operate new routes from its Bilbao base to the Canary Islands with routes to Tenerife (three times weekly), Las Palmas (twice weekly) and Lanzarote (twice weekly).

All in all, Vueling’s summer 2012 schedule will represent a 25% increase in capacity overall, and a 50% leap in its seat offer from Vueling’s main base in Barcelona. To absorb this additional production, Vueling is in advanced talks with lessors to add five or more Airbus A320 aircraft to its current fleet of 43.

Commenting on the expansion, Alex Cruz said that Vueling has “more positive attributes than any player,” to offer an “unbeatable product within Spain and throughout Europe.” Cruz cited a high number of multi-frequency routes, availability on all GDS systems, on-line check-in, seat assignment andbusiness-class service elements such as two-per-row seating, guaranteed cabin-luggage space, OneWorld-aligned miles “and many other characteristics that set us apart from the low-cost model.”

Qantas has pushed up surcharges abruptly on international and domestic flights. Increases of up to 24% will lift the cost of a single international sector by as much as AUD60. The airline blames higher fuel costs and the impact of carbon taxes in Australia and Europe.

The total surcharge for a one-way flight to the US will climb to AUD310, while those to Britain and Germany will reach AUD350.

European Union and Australian carbon pricing schemes and increased fuel costs would lift future ticket prices for Qantas and Jetstar passengers travelling domestically and internationally, the airline stated.

From 15 February 2012, surcharges to Asia and Honolulu will rise by AUD20 to reach AUD165, surcharges to Buenos Aires, Johannesburg and Santiago will rise by AUD40 to reach AUD240, surcharges to the US will rise by AUD60 to reach AUD310 and surcharges to London and Frankfurt will rise by AUD60 to reach AUD350.

The previous increase in international fuel surcharges took place on 19 April 2011.

Jet fuel is Qantas’ biggest operational cost and market prices remain consistently high, the carrier stated. The Qantas Group’s jet fuel cost for the six months to 31 December 2011 was AUD2.2 billion, an increase of around AUD450 million compared with the previous year. Average year-to-date jet fuel prices are at their highest level since 2007/08.

Qantas will also increase domestic Qantas and QantasLink fares from 9 February to reflect fuel costs. Increase amounts will vary by route and fare class but will average approximately 2.5%.

Examples of new Qantas lead-in, year-round domestic fares on and after 9 February are as follows: Sydney-Melbourne AUD117 becomes AUD122, Brisbane-Melbourne AUD155 becomes AUD159, Melbourne-Perth AUD229 becomes AUD235.

An increase of AUD2 in the fuel surcharge for domestic Qantas Frequent Flyer Classic Award redemptions (from AUD10 to AUD12) will also be implemented.

In an issued statement, Qantas said that while fuel surcharges, price increases and hedging are being used to mitigate the impact of fuel prices, they will not fully recover the cost impact. Qantas has hedged 86% of its remaining fuel requirement in 2011/12 at a worst-case crude oil price of USD121 per barrel.

On carbon pricing in Europe, Qantas says it will be required to pay an estimated AUD2.3 million for the necessary allowances. It will accordingly place a AUD3.50 surcharge on one-way fares booked in Australia for flights to London and Frankfurt.

The airline has previously put the total cost of a carbon tax in Australia, which will take effect from July, at between AUD110 million and AUD115 million next financial year, (Qantas AUD75.7 million, Jetstar AUD37 million).

American Airlines and Latin America-based LAN Airlines today announced an expanded relationship in which LAN Airlines affiliates, including LAN Chile, LAN Peru, and LAN Ecuador, will co-locate in Terminal 8 with American at New York’s JFK Airport.

LAN’s move into Terminal 8 marks the fourth oneworld® alliance carrier, besides American, to operate from the terminal, significantly improving convenience for customers by housing the airlines in the same facility.

In November 2011, American increased its commercial cooperation with LAN when it received approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin a codeshare agreement with LAN Ecuador, which provides customers of both airlines more choices and greater connectivity when traveling between the United States, Latin America and across each airline’s respective network. The colocation will continue to provide customers of both airlines better travel options and opportunities such as closer proximity to check in, go through immigration, utilize the oneworld transfer center, or access American’s and LAN’s gates.

“We highly value our partnership with LAN and the benefits it has for our joint customers,” said Kenji Hashimoto, American’s Vice President – Strategic Alliances. “This colocation reinforces our commitment to deliver the uppermost level of comfort and convenience for our customers traveling to and from Latin America.”

The new colocation also allows LAN customers easier access to American’s lounges. American offers a recently expanded Admirals Club in Concourse C and an Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge in Concourse B, each of which provide personalized service and state of the art amenities to customers before, after or between flights. The facilities feature a variety of comfortable seating choices, intimate TV lounges, cocktail and bistro areas, as well as expansive exterior views of nearby aircraft activities and the New York City Skyline. Designed for business or personal connectivity, the Admirals Club lounges and Flagship Lounge offer a business center with private carrels and work counters. Customers eligible for the Flagship Lounge can enjoy a complimentary lounge buffet, as well as complimentary premium liquors, regional wines and champagnes. For more information on Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge, including membership, one-day passes and the oneworld lounge access policy log on to www.aa.com/admiralsclub.

American and LAN are continuing to find additional ways to strengthen their partnership.

Emirates, one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, has extended its reach into Africa with the launch of a new linked service to Lusaka and Harare.

Now flying to 22 points within Africa, Emirates will connect Zambia and Zimbabwe to key markets across Europe, the Far East, Australasia and the Indian Subcontinent. The Dubai-Lusaka-Harare service operates every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday using an A330-200 aircraft in a three class configuration.

EK 713 departs Dubai at 0925hrs, arriving in Lusaka at 1450hrs. The onward connection to Harare departs Lusaka at 1620hrs, reaching the Zimbabwean capital at 1720hrs. The return flight leaves Harare at 1920hrs, arriving Lusaka at 2020hrs. It departs Lusaka at 2150hrs, landing in Dubai at 0710hrs the next day.

“Zambia and Zimbabwe are both important emerging business and industrial centres, with economies that are projected to grow by over five per cent annually during the coming years,” said Nabil Sultan, Divisional Senior Vice President Revenue Optimisation & Distribution. “Emirates’ new service will play a significant role in supporting this growth by connecting Lusaka and Harare to our worldwide network, opening new conduits for trade, investment and tourism.”

On board today’s flight were Nabil Sultan, Divisional Senior Vice President Revenue Optimisation & Distribution; Jean Luc Grillet, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations Africa; Muhammed Riza, Manager Commercial Business Development; Duncan Watson, Emirates Regional Manager Cargo Commercial; The Honourable Given Lubinda, Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs; The Honourable Yamfwa Mukanga, Zambian Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications; The Honourable Fackson Shamenda, Zambian Minister of Tourism; the Honourable Nicholas Goche, Zimbabwean Minister of Transport; Marah Hativagone, Chairperson, Zimbabwean Tourism Council (ZTC); Rueben K. Walobele, Special Assistant to Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs; Chitalu Kabalika, Aid to Zambian Minister of Transport; Agnes Chaila, Business Development Manager, National Airport Corporation Ltd. (NACL) and Cleophas Mathabire, Aid to the Zimbabwean Minister of Transport.

Upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, Emirates’ inaugural Flight 713 was greeted by a traditional water cannon salute.

“Emirates’ decision to operate to Lusaka represents new economic doors being opened to our country. The fact that this airline, which is successful on all continents, is entering markets like ours as part of its expansion plans is clear evidence of excellent future prospects for Zambia and Zambians,” said the Honourable Given Lubinda, the Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Emirates services to Lusaka will be a huge boost to its tourism industry, helping to support the Zambia Tourism Board’s target for increasing visitor arrivals by 22.5 percent to one million visitors in 2012.

The onward connection to Harare, operated by Zimbabwean Captain Ca Busiso Ndlovu, also received a warm welcome at Harare International Airport. Later that evening, leading figures from the travel trade, local businesses and the government attended a gala dinner event which featured performances by local stars Victor Kunonga, Dudu Manhenga and Oliver Tuku.

“The arrival of Emirates to Zimbabwe is a very significant development for the market. We welcome the entrance of a truly global airline; with an extensive network, large fleet and great reputation for quality service which will greatly improve choice and connectivity for Zimbabwean travelers,” said the Honourable Nicholas Goche, Zimbabwean Minister of Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development. “Emirates will bring greater capacity and fare competitiveness, which will certainly lead to traffic growth to and from Zimbabwe.”

It is expected that Emirates’ services to Harare will support the Tourism Ministry’s projections that the sector will contribute over US$5 billion to the Zimbabwean economy by 2015. To support the linked service, Emirates will promote Zambia and Zimbabwe’s tourism attractions, including Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, game reserves and safaris, in advertising campaigns executed across the airline’s global network. Emirates Holidays will also feature eight pages on Zimbabwe and Zambia in its 2012 World of Choice brochure.

With a fleet of 169 aircraft, Emirates is the world’s largest Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 operator. The airline placed an order for 50 new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft at the Dubai Airshow in November, bringing its total order book to 236 aircraft, worth over US$84 billion at list prices.

Following the launch of Lusaka and Harare, Emirates will start services to Dallas, Texas on 2nd February and Seattle on 1st March, Ho Chi Minh City on 4th June and Barcelona on 3rd July.

The newly opened 1,935-square-metre Level 7 lounge, together with the 1,002-square-metre Business Class Lounge on Level 6 that reopened in April last year, offers a new level of comfort and service for passengers flying out of Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery Philippe de Gentile-Williams at the iconic Long Bar of The Wing’s Level 7 Business Class Lounge, which re-opens to passengers in the late afternoon of 31 January 2012.

The Wing, the airline’s flagship lounge at Hong Kong International Airport, is currently going through a complete refurbishment in order to maintain its position as one of the world’s best airline lounges and to help satisfy the growing demand for lounge usage in Hong Kong. The final phase of renovations for The Wing will be for the First Class Lounge, which will begin shortly. Designed by London-based architects Foster + Partners, The Wing renovations will be completed in full by the fourth quarter of 2012.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery Philippe de Gentile-Williams said: “The refurbishment of The Wing highlights our commitment to offering the highest level of products and services to our valued customers. We will continue to make significant investments to ensure we deliver the very best to our passengers both on the ground and in the air.”

Among the many changes and upgrades is the signature Noodle Bar, which has not only doubled in seating capacity, but also moved beyond its original enclosed area to a larger open-ceiling space with ample sunlight and natural live bamboo decorations. On top of freshly made noodles, passengers can now enjoy the newly introduced Chinese-style buns, or bao, including the popular Char Siu Bao.

The new Noodle Bar features an open-ceiling space with ample natural light and live bamboo decorations.

Also new to The Wing is the introduction of The Coffee Loft, a relaxing space where passengers can enjoy a cup of specialty coffee and freshly baked pastries. Self-service buffet counters featuring a wide variety of quality Asian and Western hot dishes along with cold food selections are also available on both levels of the lounge throughout the day.

The refurbished Business Class sections of The Wing offer a wide range of designer furniture including 35 unique Cathay Solus Chairs designed specifically to accommodate single travellers’ needs. The Level 6 lounge also houses all 24 of The Wing’s Business Class shower suites where passengers can freshen up before departures.

As with all Cathay Pacific lounges, The Wing’s Business Class Lounge is open to First and Business Class passengers, Silver and above Marco Polo Club members and Sapphire and above oneworld members. Opening hours are from 5:30am until the last departure.

The Coffee Loft is a relaxing environment where passengers can enjoy a cup of specialty coffee and freshly baked pastries

Overview

The Wing is Cathay Pacific’s flagship lounge at Hong Kong International Airport. Offering passengers unparalleled levels of comfort and convenience, The Wing set a new standard in airline ground service when it first opened its doors in 1998. The original design was created by renowned British designer John Pawson to represent the ultimate in spaciousness, tranquillity and uncluttered design.

While The Wing is an “old friend” to many of Cathay’s most frequent travellers, we recognise the need to continue offering the highest level of products and services to our valued customers. After 13 years in operation, Cathay Pacific appointed London-based Foster + Partners to redesign the lounge space with a full-scale renovation and refurbishment commencing in late 2010.

The renovation is being carried out in phases to minimise inconvenience to passengers. Phase I of the renovation for the Level 6 Business Class lounge was completed in April 2011, followed by Phase II – for the Level 7 Business Class lounge – which was completed in January 2012. The last phase will be the Level 7 First Class lounge, and the work will be completed in full by the fourth quarter of 2012.

The Level 6 lounge houses all of The Wing’s Business Class shower suites – 24 in total (including one for disabled users) – where passengers can freshen up before departures.

Open ceilings and unobstructed views remain the hallmarks of The Wing. The original minimalist design is enhanced by contemporary and refreshing elements intended to re-establish The Wing as one of the best airport lounges in the world.

The sense of expectation builds immediately on arrival, with passengers greeted by our warm and friendly staff before heading to the balcony level. Inside this exclusive space, passengers have the freedom to recharge, relax, or catch up on some work.

Materials

The palette of materials has been carefully chosen to create a comfortable environment, one which relates to the airport as a whole while remaining distinctive in its own right. Building on the materials from the original The Wing and The Cabin, the new space features a palate of warm woods, white Carrara marble, “Nero Marquina” black marble and “China Black” granite.

The hugely popular Noodle Bar has been greatly expanded and has also moved beyond its original enclosed area to a larger, open-ceiling space with ample sunlight and natural live bamboo from Mainland China. The mix of bamboo material and natural stone gives a modern Asian feel to the space, making it a perfect place for passengers to relax and enjoy a bowl of freshly made noodles together with a selection of authentic Asian dishes.

The Long Bar remains an iconic feature of The Wing, and the white marble which forms the 23-metre-long feature was hand-picked from Italy.

The two self-service buffet counters, one on each level of The Wing, are also finished with white Carrara marble to provide the perfect backdrop to a variety of high-quality Asian and Western hot food selections along with cold dishes.

Furnishing

The furniture featured in The Wing comes from some of the world’s best craftsmen. The Foster 503 & Foster 500 leather armchairs designed by Sir Norman Foster and the Oscar Armchair designed by Person Lloyd are both produced by renowned furniture maker Walter Knoll, while the Imprimatur leather armchair and Kalos armchair, both designed by Antonio Citterio, have been produced by B&B Italia. These contemporary pieces are complemented by Cathay Pacific’s unique Solus Chair, which was designed by Cathay Pacific and Foster + Partners around the needs of the single traveller and handcrafted by Poltrona Frau in Italy.
